“The relief turned out to be extremely awkward, because it was totally dark and the entire area was constantly under very heavy artillery fire. Some companies did not reach their allocated positions until dawn. All the routes were blocked with wounded and fallen being carried away. The position itself was as good as destroyed. Every single dugout and their entrances had fallen in. If the right flank was in a pitiful state, the remaining parts were so shot up that the rifle sections had to seek cover holes in the ground, where they were cut off and had to share them with the dead and wounded.”
